LEVITATION AT IPANEMA BEACH

Brazil is a country of contrasts: the big cities, the rainforest, the poor and the rich living side by side. One needs to understand it before loving it. It’s a country of two souls, two worlds, which barely touch each other. But it’s at the beach that these two worlds mix, social barriers dissolve and the beauty of the Brazilian people emerges: – golden bodies, open smiles and warm hearts. It was this magic that inspired Australian artist Craig Ruddy to paint in Brazil.

His plans for a two-week holiday in Brazil turned into an eight-month stay in Rio. Arriving at the airport, Craig felt an inexplicable, almost mythical attraction for the country. “I must confess that as soon as my feet touched the ground, I felt at home and thought that this was where I should have been born.” He managed successfully to capture his impressions of Rio in his work. ‘Levitation’, a series of 29 paintings, portrays the colours of Ipanema beach, with bodies moving graciously, framed by the ocean on a summer’s day.

The strong impression that Brazil left on him still remains. Craig wants to return, not as a tourist but to live there and paint its beauty and become better acquainted with its people. “In a city of such contrasts as Rio, with so many reasons to despair, I found elevated souls.”
